The Summer of 1997

The summer was especially frenetic. Marc and Claire were gradually moving to Southfield and settling into the new place. In between carting boxes and putting the condo up for sale, Claire attended the CALICO symposium at West Point in New York.

As part of her job at the The Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR), she conducted the Materials/Technology Development Workshop for Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs), in which outstanding professors of LCTLs from many parts of the country participated.

The next challenge was to put Language Learning & Technology (LLT) Journal online. Claire was Web Production Editor for the first issue, and Marc provided much technical expertise. Check it out and sign up for a subscription -- it's free!

The next CLEAR summer workshop, the Technology and the Internet Institute for Foreign Language Teachers, was attended by teachers of foreign languages who wanted to learn more about the Internet and how to incorporate this resource into their teaching.

In August Claire attended the FLEAT III Conference at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. There she presented a paper, "The Dark Side of the Web" and spoke on the plenary panel "FutureWatch."

(We were glad when the summer was over!)
