Methodology Course Syllabus

The methodology course consists of 5 hour and a half sessions. The class meets twice a week: Class A runs for 2 hours, and class B runs for 3 hours.

Identify the main features underlying different teaching methods with a focus on the communicative approach.

Identifying the theoretical basis and principles underlying the:

  • the grammar translation method
  • the direct method
  • the audio-lingual method
  • the communicative approach

 

Compare/ contrast the teaching approach underlying each of these methods

  • Teacher trainer introduces these four methods, gives examples for clarification.
  • In groups, STs are to compare/ contrast these methods.
  • Group presentation and class discussion
  • Groups work again to decide on what they consider to be the weaknesses and strengths of each of the above methods.
  • Group presentation and class discussion
  • Class come up with a list comparing/contrasting & pointing points of weaknesses and strengths of these methods.

    Out of Class Assignment

    1. STs read an article about the communicative approach to EFL teaching and respond to the worksheets attached to the readings.

    2. STs look at examples of communicative EFL activities in their coursebook and decide on the main features of these activities. They check their answers in their groups.

    3. In groups, STs either adapt EFL teaching activity to make it more communicative or design a communicative activity.

  • different seating arrangement to use in the class
  • different approaches to organizing teaching space
  • Ways of managing time
  • Ways of managing Ss
    • Class discussion of the reading article
    • Teacher trainer models some classroom management techniques to STs & STs practice some of these techniques
    • In groups STs carry out the activities in their coursebook.

  • In groups, STs design one of these activities and present it to class.

    Each group selects a lesson from the student textbook and develops a lesson plan. Groups present their lesson plans to class(during class "B" ) using either using PowerPoint or Inspiration

    Teaching Structure

    STs will be

    • aware of a variety of techniques to teach structure
    • able to design different civilities for presenting and practicing structure
    • Teacher trainer discusses with STs the major problems learners have with learning structure and the different techniques teachers can use in teaching structure
    • Teacher trainer presents different activities for teaching structure and practice some of these activities with STs
    • STs work in groups to come up with the list identifying the characteristics of effective activities for teaching structure
    • STs, in groups, design an activity for teaching structure and present it(in class "B")using PowerPoint or Inspiration
    • STs use feedback from class to improve the activity

    Effective use of audio-visual aids in Language teaching.

    By the end of this class, STs will be able to:

  • Select appropriate aids for their teaching objectives
  • In groups, design appropriate audio-visual aids for a lesson in the textbook used in schools
  • Groups present their work to class
  • Groups use the feedback they get from class to improve their aids
  • Teacher trainer discusses the importance of using audio-visual aids in class and then discusses the use of selected aids to enhance language skills
  • Teacher trainer shows STs samples of teaching aids
  • Class develops guiding principles for appropriate use of aids in class
  • Class shares their examples from the EFL playhouse and decide how they can use this in their classes
  • In groups, STs design simple teaching aids for a lesson in the textbook used in schools
  • Groups present their work to class
  • Groups use the feedback they get from class to improve their aids
